Remember that I’d mentioned the lot of the last five stencils were going to be traveling as part of a show? Yes, yes I did. Were you paying attention? Hmmm?

Well it’s actually a string of shows rather than a single show. There's also a live component to the shows. One of the organizers that worked on putting together the Melbourne Stencilfest asked me to be a part of another stencil/street art show that she was organizing. Needless to say, I was excited from the start (thanks, Bo). K-Swiss is sponsoring the shows/event in order to introduce street art/stenciling to an audience in the Far East. The tour [called K-Spray 05] features live stenciling by three of the best working in the medium: Logan Hicks (LA), Sixten (Sweden) and Phibs (Melbourne).

The international artists represented in the accompanying gallery exhibitions include: Hammo, Fremantle, M-City, Slugzilla, Tell-Tale (that’s’s ME!), Tusk, Unwell Bunny, Aryze, Form, Ghostpatrol, Meggs, Psalm, Doke, LTMP, MtED, and Ghetto Kitty. There are only three of us from the U.S. (me, Slugzilla and Logan)- I'm pretty excited to be reppin' stenciling for the US.

Here is the tour’s itinerary:

September 3rd - Tokyo, Japan
SuperDeluxe: Azabu, Minato-ku

September 6th - Hong Kong, China
Art Statement (in soho), Central

September 8th - Taipei, Taiwan
Artist Village - No. 7 Beiping East Road

September 10th - Seoul, Korea
Gallery Won - Kangnam-Gu

September 13th- Bangkok, Thailand
Bed Supper Club, Klongtoey-nua, Wattana

The five pieces that I’ll have on tour are:

hangman You too can leave comments [if you'd like], go ahead it's not scary. I promise. Click on that link under the post, that one called "What does your heart say?!" yup. You got it.

Something new, ooo ahhh. I’d been slowly working towards a [fully] new stenciled piece for the past few weeks... and here’s the result of that over on the right.

The background is comprised of collaged pages of the Knight’s Tale from the Canterbury Tales (Middle English text). After being fixed to the substrate they were covered over with a coat of gloss medium. The large letters on the right were cut individually and sprayed lightly and with a slight fade. The word noose (containing an 8 and/or infinity) was cut separately and sprayed reversed in some places. The hangman is a four layer stencil. This is another 16x20 inch piece.

I sprayed another version of the Shadows/Screamer for the show I’ve been alluding to for some time now. This was sprayed over a b&w photo poster of a forest. The original poster was 18x24 and this was cut down to 16x20. I chose the crop based on the diagonal branches slicing through the frame. The spiral stencil behind the main images was sprayed multiple times at varied angles in three colors.

Click the link in the sidebar and check out the art making journal of Shawn Wood. good stuff.

Things you don't need Here’s another version of the Girl with Gun stencil.

Here’s some info on the process of this one: This was painted on a cut down advertisement (the original ad was 4x8 feet). The hand is part of the original ad. The black and off-white circles are acrylic and were painted with a wine cork. There also some stenciled circles floating around in the mix too. The bag was masked with a quick uneven acrylic glaze. The red background 'bursts' behind the girl and the shopping were stenciled in red and then outlined with black paint marker. Each line of text was a separate stencil.

I think the red background bursts kind of have the feel of the Canadian flag’s maple leaf, but that wasn’t intentional.

For those keeping score: the piece measures 16x20inches, the girl is a 6 layer layer stencil, there’s 1 stencil for each line of text, some of the circles are stenciled, and there was 1 stencil created for the red background "bursts.

Absinthe and Coffee So yes indeed I did get quite a bit of stenciling done while I was home this past weekend. Over there on the right is a piece that I was able to finish up. The main image is the so called ‘absinthe girl’ that I’d done on a found drawer a few weeks earlier.

The background for this piece is a cardboard box coffee box for Espresso Classico. It’s a product of Sweden and the box is therefore entirely in Swedish. I was able to get it unassembled. Essentially after the cardboard was printed, but before it could be folded / assembled and used. The packaging was used inside another box as a divider for a shipment we received at work. A little bonus perk of working for a Swedish company I suppose.

I began building up the background at the bottom of the my canvas using a simple rectangular stencil (that I’d used for the earlier version of the absinthe girl). I sprayed a few overlapping gradients using different colors that worked with the color scheme of the product packaging. I then masked off long vertical sections using artists tape and sprayed a few layers, moved the tape and sprayed again. After that I removed the tape, inverted it and reapplied it as a permanent element of the piece.

I sprayed multiple single layers of the girl and finished a central version (4 layers). Each word was cut separately and sprayed many, many times to get the desired affect. And there you have it: “Does coffee really help?

This piece (along with some others to come in the near future) is going on a long journey fairly soon. I’ll tell ya about that later.
