Here's some progress on that last piece I'd posted. Building up the skin tones, making her look more fleshed out, ya dig? Solidity. "Innovation not slabs of bacon" as C.N. used to say.

circles: the skin

I decided to start a MySpace page for my studio. Why? Because I like to make new friends. Well, sometimes I do. It's not on the links page yet, but you can go go go friend that flava right here:

Oh and in case you wondering where to spend that Christmas cash you got from your family... in the sale section, the Girl w/ Gun messenger bag and the yellow Shadows / Screamer are no longer available. You snooze, you lose. Hope to have new stuff posted soon.

Have a great Christmas everyone! I'm heading back to Chicago for a few days. No art update this week.

Why not check out what's been happening in Manhattan...
11 Spring St.

One of the most important street art related events ever imo.

Here's something else...jumping around from project to project quite a bit lately, no? Are you still with me? This one's on decorative paper and approximately 8.5 x 11 inches. This started with a pencil sketch on the circle-paper, from there it progressed into a line drawing like this.

The next step was to fill in the outline with clear acrylci gesso. Interesting stuff. I didn't want to use tradtional white gesso because that would have hidden the circles from showing through the figure... which I wanted to happen. On the other hand, this particular paper has zero tooth to it and wouldn't have been a good surface for layered colored pencil work. Ah, clear gesso saves the day.

After gessoing, I got out the colored pencils and went to work. You can see the color array that I used for the flesh tones under the drawing. This was just the first layer quickly laid in.

I recently completed a stenciled jacket for a friend of mine. Granted it's an old stencil re-visited, it's the first time I've stenciled something in over a year. It actually took me that long, too. Why? I attribute it to stencil burn-out. Anyhow, below is the last version of Girl with Gun to be produced. This stencil has been retired [read: destroyed]. Done with acrylics since it's on fabric and, in the end, much more convenient for me.

Here are a couple of process shots as it all comes together...

-step one: fill the outline with multiple layers of acrylic medium so that the paint doesn't soak into the fabric

-step two: fill in layer one- white. If you've been following this blog since my 'stencil era' this is probably already looking familiar, no?

-step 3, 4, 5: fill in the appropriate color with each layer. You get the idea.

I went back to a painting that I started back in August. [Click on the August archive link at the bottom of the page if you're wondering.] It's one of those projects that I've always intended to finish, yet didn't feel compelled to work on straight through.

This pic is just another phase of the hair: more layers, more layers...
big hair in progress

How to get a controlled drippy looking effect:
*small plastic baggie filled with just the right mixture of water and latex,
*snip off a very tiny piece of a corner of the bag,
*squeeze as neccessary.
