I've been working on my submissions for the Vinyl Killers 3 show coming up in couple'a'few months. That will be the last show I submit to before I move and work slows for awhile. Here's some pics from VK1... browse around that site for info on the show.

So it would seem that making art on pieces of found drawers is becoming a frequent theme eh? Yeah I guess so.
So it would seem that making art on pieces of found drawers is becoming a frequent theme eh? Yeah I guess so.
I started this project with two panels from a drawer. They're the side panels: they have dovetail joints intact and a mitered interior surface [for drawer divider panels]. I connected the two boards and now they're joined as a single panel. The next step was to cut (and adhere) some text within the smaller 'panes' created by the criss-crossing of the miter cuts. The text is in French: it's from a book by Simenon called Maigret se trompe (Maigret is mistaken).
After that I went about spraying the noose text in reverse and overlapped. I then cut out the overlapped layers. Sounds confusing, no? Well here's how that turned out. It was time consuming, but I like the end result. After this was adhered to the board, I coated the whole thing with a layer of gloss medium to protect the paper surfaces.
Next I laid in the 4 layer hangman. After that I went about the task of spraying all of the overlapping NOOSE text you see at the bottom of the figure. This again was very time consuming. Overall I'm pretty happy with the piece.

This week I painted a piece on a drawer scavenged from the alleyway. From the aqua color and the vintage handle (removed), I'd guess that it's from late 50s early / 60s era. Playing off of the vintage-y color and vibe of the panel, I planned to add some 'bubbles' to get a circus-y feel going, which I thought fit well with the androgynous creepy hangman. I'm not sure why. :/

I started by laying down a few rubbery coasters that I'd picked up from the thrift store way back when. [I'd decided to get rid of these awhile back, but then thought I should hold onto 'em until I was in need of a circle templates.] SO I layed them on the drawer and went about misting, spraying and spattering the surface of the drawer. After that I laid down a few of the noose stencils and a reverse version that same stencil down in the corner. That was done by simply laying the wet stencil onto the surface and burnishing it to transfer the still-wet paint.
The four layer hangman was laid into place and sprayed. As a bit of finishing, I went ahead and outlined the aqua circles with some paint pens.
This guy along with the Caution Girl [with bullet holes] was just shipped away to a show I'd been invited to participate in awhile ago. It's called the Street Sweepers and is taking place at Firlefanz Gallery on August 26th in Albany, NY. The show and is based around this idea:
Street Sweepers will be a show of art by street artists based on the concept of breathing life into the salvaged scraps of society. We, the Street Sweepers, ask you, the street artist, to take a walk and find a discarded object from your home town and paint on it. We are primarily asking stencil artists to be involved in the show, but we encourage all mediums of work.
There's over 60 great artist's participating in this show, too. sweet. I'm leaving for a short vacation tomorrow- going to LA to see the Basquiat exhibition that I missed when I was in NY. again, sweet.

I was busy stenciling this week. Honestly I was. But I'm not going to post any of that because I don't feel like typing about it today. It's OK to boo. But don't worry there will be pics next week.

Over on the right... I used a resume folder as a test surface for the circle stencils that I'd made for the Buy!Buy!Buy! piece [see last post]. I saved the folder and decided to do a pen drawing over the top. This drawing now lives in Livonia, MI. Here's a sticker done with pen and Sharpie. K bye.
