I drew up two new stickers this week. Here’s the second. For these I used a ballpoint pen and some acrylic / matte medium. I cut a few stencils while in Indy this week and this weekend I’ll be home to actually paint them.

It’s about the life of Jean-Michel Basquiat for those of you that are a bit slower. I have really mixed feelings about what I think of him and his work. I didn’t really know that much about him prior to reading the book, only that some people considered him a graffiti / street artist. Well in my opinion, he was neither. He did some art, that early on in his development, happened to be on the street. He was equal parts: a prick, intelligent, being taken advantage of, scamming the artworld, perceptive, clever, innovative, a sham, tragic, helpless, indifferent, generous, needy, arrogant, a junky, manipulative… I could probably think of about 50 more.
I found him to be one of the most complex people I’ve ever read about. In the very least, I think I find certain elements of him / his story are inspirational as much as certain pieces are pathetic and/or sad.

So Indy is a huge convention city. It’s a MAJOR part of the economy here. Every weekend there’s a different contingent of people swarming all of the downtown hotels, including the one I’m stationed at. This week it’s some religious, Christian convention. Most often, when you share an elevator ride with them, you get the same parting words as you leave the car: “Jesus loves you.”

I was feeling rather annoyed by their fervor and their need to share it with whoever happened to be around. So I took one of their posters and used it as a canvas (it reads ‘Church of the Nazarene.’) Ballpoint pen, acrylic and red cray-pa.
The Art Trade that I mentioned last post is going well- I have offers for 7 of 9 pieces.

When I went out to Indy, I brought 8 of these rectangular pieces of cardboard with me. I finished working on the last of the lot this week. The piece over on the right was done with acrylic and a reg’lar ballpoint pen. You can see all of them if you scan through the posts from that past few weeks. I’m thinking of setting up a trade mini trade project through StencilRev.

Basically, I’ll make these available to any artist that wants to trade for a piece that took about the same amount of time to make. I’d be open to any 2D piece of art, it wouldn’t need to be a stenciled piece. I’ll let you know how that goes. I also had time to draw up a sticker.
I worked on some new stencil art while I was back home last weekend, but I’ll hold off on posting those until they’re done.

Some new stickers drawn with Sharpies and a black ballpoint pen. One over there on the right and here's the other. That’s about it. Short update I know, do you feel cheated? I’m sorry you know I love you.

I will celebrate birthday three-oh on Tuesday. Woo hoo.

Every other weekend or so I get to take a break from this life of awesomeness in Indianapolis and go back home. The past few weekends I’ve been home, I’ve been able to work on a new stencil design little by little. I was going to incorporate this image into a larger more ambitious piece, so really this was a ‘test-spray.’ A test spray that turned into a piece on it’s own I guess. I call it Absinthe Drunk.

It’s four layers for the girl (who happens to be Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls), a layer that I doubled for the background pattern, and a stencil for each of the words. It’s painted on the front panel of a found / scavenged drawer. The green background color is Krylon’s celery green. Cool color, but the worst/runniest paint I've ever used- it seemed to be almost as thin as water. Kept seeping under the stencil. The green boxes were outlined with a thin-line paint pen, otherwise it’s all stenciled. The text is more offset and layered towards the bottom. You’re quick, so I’m sure that you can guess why. I was also thinkin: people who can [or can't] HANDLE their liquor. Or when you're drunk/stumbly and looking for something to hold onto.
Looks like I’m gonna be here longer than I thought at the end of last week. *sigh* <-(very audible and angsty sigh). "Me on your front porch" by Criteria is such a good song. You wish you knew.
