Quadrant two tilingThe second quadrant is finished as you can see on the right. As in quadrant one, I used an iridescent tile (Light Blue) in this quadrant. The remaining two quadrants will be finished with a Marbled Light Blue tile, but for the sake of variation, these quadrants won't be done with an iridescent.

Added a few links and activated the archives.

Sorry no update this week...but here's a pen sketch I did of the girl that was standing next to me at the show I went to at Fireside tonight. I'm leaving for a much needed vacation: off to Fort Myers! Catch you all after the 25th!

Table border session 2Ok, first the photo host that I was using was down for a few days, so I switched services and then all of a sudden and mysteriously, my blog template disappeared leaving me unable to post or edit. But now I'm back in business...

So more tiling was done as you can see; the next phase was the border around the design. Nip, nip, glue...nip, nip, nip, glue...etc...etc...

Two quadrants contain Cobalt Blue tiles and two quadrants have Black tile as the border. After I finished the border, which is flush with the edge of the table all the way around, I worked on filling in one of the quadrants from start to finish using Steel Blue Iridescent tiles. I tried to get you the effect of iridescent tiles as best I could in the picture at right. Iridescent tile effect

So
three
more
quadrants
to go...

Ohio River bridge sketchBack from the mini-vacation...here's a sketch of a bridge that spans the Ohio river connecting Jeffersonville, IN and Louisville, KY from the 'ol sketchbook.

Here are some responses to questions that Kara, a visitor to the Tell.Tale.Heart Studio, posted in the comments:

I notice you kept close track of your time on the cd project but not the mosaic- was that due to the nature of the commission?
No, the reason that I haven't listed any times thus far is that I started the mosaic table project before the blog began, so I wasn't keeping a tally of the hours spent. Although, I'll most likely estimate the time spent on the table once I get back to tiling (hopefully tomorrow night).

You used a digi-photo of your friend for the main figure- I expect you printed it, were you happy with this process? That is, do you find you get a good enough print to use for reference?
I did print the digital pic for the initial sketches, but I found that when I was refining the sketch to a more finalized contour drawing, that it was easier to pull up the image on my cpu and actually sit in front of it and sketch.

I'd be interested to hear how documenting is, if at all, effecting your process.
So far the biggest impact has been on my level of productivity. I'm finding that the process of documenting like this has been keeping me working more steadily- which was one of the main reasons that I created this blog/journal. There's some sense of accountability to the people who visit my site and that keeps me working on a steady schedule as much as having a deadline does.

There were instances where suggestions that people had left in the comments influenced elements of CD cover. It might not be 'interactive' art entirely, but the interaction/feedback through the comments section is definitely something that I'm liking so far.

Are you happy with the CD illustration? Have you shown the client yet? At what stage(s) did you have to run your work by them?
Yes, I'm very satisfied with the way the CD cover turned out. The clients have the illustration and were very happy with how it turned out. They were watching the progress as I blogged, and thankfully, I was right on cue with what they wanted from the start, so there weren't any adjustments to be made (which is always nice).
